In the summertime.....

It's been a couple of months since my last update. Where does the time go? It's so scary. We've already had our first visitors of the summer - our good friends Betsy and Steve. When we have friends come over it's like a holiday for us too. Meals out and barbecues interspersed with snorkelling, swimming, fishing etc.
We tried to recreate a "Broadchurch" moment on the beach. Not sure if it quite worked but we had a lot of fun doing it! Fortunately there was nobody else on the beach at the time as we were running around trying to stage the photo with the camera on timer and trying to look serious. After a few takes this was the result. Steve, me, Mark and Betsy.

Another attempt, this time at a movie reconstruction..... The James Bond film - Die another Day with Halle Berry. Unfortunately I didn't have a white knife belt....or knife come to think of it......or an orange bikini, but I did have a mask and snorkel.

Mark took Steve out on a fishing trip on our little boat along with Mark our other friend. Another movie reconstruction....Jaws.

Mark (Quint), Steve (Chief Martin Brody) and Mark (Matt Hooper) about to embark on their fishing trip aboard Athina Vaso.

Steve..............."We're gonna need a bigger boat"!

Needless to say they didn't need a bigger boat - they did catch three fish though. They went on the barbie that night.

Talking of fish.....a surprise in Sami harbour. Cornetfish in about eight feet of water.

Getting back to summer....we also had a good laugh at Antisamos beach. Someone must have been recently married at the Beach Bar and the "Just Married" banner was still in place above the bar so Betsy decided that Mark and I should pretend to get married and post the photo on Facebook. We had a ring (bright pink rubber inflatable ring), a bouquet (well a flower!), and there was some confetti remaining on the ground from the actual wedding....... so the stage was set. We even had two witnesses watching, though they didn't know they were witnesses at the time!

Snorky the camper van has been working tirelessly all winter and spring taking Mark and I together with Rocky and Bobby to various locations around Kefalonia, and now that summer is here he is gearing up for our visitors.
Unfortunately he was attacked just recently. We had just parked on a main street when an old woman threw a barrel of water over him from an upstairs apartment! Not only did Snorky get wet but I was in the passenger seat with the window open so I got drenched as well! I'm not sure what it was all about but when we mentioned it to a shopkeeper she said the woman was known for being a bit crazy. Poor Snorky.
He's not doing so much running around lately as we have been out and about on our little boat Athina Vaso.

We are in a perfect location for a boat as we have the whole of Sami bay with lots of coves to explore some of which are inaccessible by car. One of our favourites is Dichala beach. Dichala beach has a certain fascination for me as there is a gate at one end of the beach, two concrete pillars on either side of it. There is no lock and you can simply walk around either side of it. It just seems to be sitting there. As you can see from one of the photos below, there is nothing else around. A rough path leads up to it and a  beautiful path covered in rubble, leads beyond it and I just had to see where it went.

Venturing up the path - look at the colours!

We had our first trip to Roboli cove in June - 10 minutes on Athina Vaso took us to this very picturesque cove not far from Agia Effimia.

It was deserted so we spent a very relaxing couple of hours snorkelling and swimming and bobbing around in the pink inflatable ring which our son and girlfriend left us last year after their visit. The water was so clear and there were lots of fish around. All you could hear in the cove was the water lapping at the edge and the odd goat bell in the hills and every now and then a yacht would sail past. Just bliss.

Sometimes after we've been swimming, on the way home we stop off at a little place in Sami called Stoa for a bit of lunch. You can't beat healthy homemade pies! I have to say the pie fillings and pastry are really tasty.

Stoa and their great advertisement for homemade pies!

When we're not out and about at coves we sometimes take a trip to the local camp site swimming pool in Karavomylos. It's free to use for tourists and locals. It has to be the best pool with a stunning backdrop and it's kept immaculate.
The campsite opened for the season in May so we thought we'd chill out.

Beautiful backdrop to the pool

It was rather busy! The pool all to myself.

The camp site is directly opposite Sami beach.............. You can just see Ithaca through the arch

........and there's nothing better than sitting here having a coffee after the dog walk in the morning, overlooking Sami bay and Ithaca watching the sneaky ferry coming in. You can just see it in the background below. It glides in and out without a sound.

Back in May I went on another horse trek with a friend who lives here, and her son and girlfriend. The weather was just perfect. We tried to get a photo with all of us on but due to some horses not liking others it was a bit difficult. This was the result. From the left, Paddy, Fran, Me and Helen.

We've also been busy in the garden, though now it's summer we have to do the gardening in the morning or at night as it really is a sun trap and gets incredibly hot. The pergola that we've had put in will be great next year once the vines, roses and wisteria have done their climbing, but for now there is just temporary cover.
Welcome to Sunflower Villa, complete with gecko ........ we do have sunflowers but they haven't flowered yet!
